See SWNS story SWKATIE; Millions of Brits faced Bank Holiday travel misery yesterday (Mon) as Storm Katie ripped across the country - bringing winds up to 100mph. Easter Monday had a bleak beginning as the Met Office recorded an amber weather warning along the south coast - where scores of trees were felled and dozens of roads were closed. Thousands of homes were left without power across the South East, and more than 20 trees were recorded down as gusts reached up to 106mph in The Needles, in the Isle of Wight. Gatwick and Heathrow Airports were both forced to cancel more than 40 flights as a result of the gusty weather.

Scene in Greenwhich, London, where Storm Katie has blown over a crane today 28/3/16. See NATIONAL copy NNWIND. Storm Katie wreaked havoc across London as torrential rain and winds of up to 68 miles per hour lashed the capital. A crane was blown over in Greenwich, south east London, in the early hours of Easter Monday while the wind lifted the roof off a block of flats in Wimbledon, south west London. Gusty conditions made Bank Holiday travel conditions hazardous with several trees uprooted and the Dartford River Crossing was closed due to strong winds. Police were called just before 2am this morning (MON) to reports of a broken crane at a building site in Creekside Road, Greenwich. The road was closed between Greenwich Church Street and Norman Road, while emergency services dealt with the incident. Police said nobody was injured, but a nearby residential building was evacuated.
